The print itself is stitched onto the surface of the jacket, which induces an illusionary effect in which these shadowy humanoid faces morph from abstraction to palpability in any given viewer’s peripheral vision. Gaultier’s approach to the construction of this jacket integrated ironically passĂ© motifs onto a modernist silhouette. He integrated exaggerated shoulder support, leather appliquĂ© detailing around the cuffs and collar, and an elongated slit down the rear base onto a non-tapered broad draped cut body.Â
